Last Monday, Mama cat started getting sick. We had noticed she wasn't eating or drinking, so we were force feeding her. She was getting congested and dehydrated and also had symptoms of mastitis, so she went to the vet. The vet didn't want to give her antibiotics with the kittens nursing, so they sent her home with instructions to massage the hard kitty boob.
On Wednesday, it was much worse and she was super dehydrated. The kittens weren't gaining weight and most would resist bottle feeding (although they were still nursing). Everyone went to the vet again, but this time mama didn't come home. She's still there. So we started bottle feeding the kittens every three hours.
Some of the kittens wouldn't eat from the bottle no matter what we did, and they started dying. Dan learned to tube feed, but it wasn't enough. It seems like their digestive systems weren't working and they also were congested.
Kittens 1-3 died Thursday-Saturday, but little gray kitten is a fighter. It was looking bad on Saturday, but he pulled through and now he is passionate about drinking. He's on antibiotics as of Sunday since he coughs a little bit. Today I noticed his teeth are coming in, so maybe he'll eat solid food soon.
This song goes out to little gray kitten and his new found love of tickles and belly rubs:
